Styling tips for Family Sessions

Styling tips for Family Sessions

1) Start with one outfit and add-on/work from there.  I always suggest starting with moms outfit and styling the rest of the family around her choice.

In the image below, it was the dress Cindy is wearing that started the whole theme of their wardrobe.

KendraConroyPhotographyfamilyphotographer

2) Color Palettes: When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting softer, lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments.

3) Try to avoid mixing patterns, such as stripes and plaids. Mixing different patterns can be a tad busy for the eye.

4) Try to avoid clothing that has distractive wording or characters. Avoid large logo’s, emblems and graphics like “GAP” and “Old Navy” because again, these will typically distract attention away from the subject. We want your faces and emotion to show, not promote the clothing company you purchased from!

5) COMPLEMENT & COORDINATE BUT DON’T GET TOO MATCHY! Find a color palette that you love and choose outfits that compliment each other without looking too matchy-matchy. We want everyone to look unique and portray their individual style. Stay away from ‘blue jeans and a white t-shirt’ for everyone or outfits that don’t allow personality.

6) DON’T BE AFRAID TO DRESS IT UP

Have you thought about rocking a romantic gown, tulle skirt, but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up! Remember: There is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your portrait session, so don’t be afraid to have some fun! A portrait session is also a great time to bring a new permanent piece (or two!) into your closet!

If you choose to wear jeans or pants I just recommend getting a fit that you really love and feel great in. If you choose to wear something more casual on the bottom, then think about dressing it up on top. A beautiful flowy top or lace accent can make your outfit feel special for this occasion.

Quick Tip: There’s no such thing as too dressed up.

7) Dresses and skirts look most stunning because they really flatter every female body, especially on camera!

Long, full-length, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. Especially in nature, like a field, forest, or in front of a barn. Consider softer fabrics which allow for beautiful movement in the images.

When considering the length of your dresses or skirts, it’s also a good idea to factor in whether or not there will be little ones in your photos. If you have smaller children, I’ll likely have you sitting or crouching on the ground to interact up-close with them. Cute, shorter cocktail-length dresses photograph beautifully, but if you have little ones in your photos, a floor-length dress or skirt, or perhaps a cute midi-skirt, will make moving around with your kids much easier, and look perfect on camera, too.

If you’re an expecting mother, we always recommend floor-length gowns or maxi dresses. These dresses create the best silhouettes to flatter your figure and really highlight your bump.

8) Things to think about:

-Avoid getting a new look or hairstyle a week before your session, give yourself time to absorb it and figure out how to style it. I want you to feel like yourself for your session

-Don’t get a spray tan if you’ve never had one before. Nothing is worse than looking orange or streaky for your session. Sometimes large tanning streaks are something photoshop cannot fix. (Photoshop fees are not something that are included with your session fee. Simple fixes such as editing out a pimple or two are included, but intensive photoshopping is something that would cost you an additional fee to fix.)

-Make sure your nails are not chipped. I photograph the small details of moms with their babies such as you holding onto their little tiny hands in yours.

9) Wear what you feel good in! Moms and dads, this tip is for you specifically. If you aren’t comfortable in what you’ve chosen for pictures, it will show. If you can’t find a dress you feel good in, but you rock a good pair of skinny jeans, do that. If you can barely walk in heels, there’s no harm in doing cute and comfy flat boots or pretty sandals. If you can’t do a heel (like me), a wedge is a great alternative, too.

Be sure to check out my Pinterest board of my top picks and suggestions of what to wear! Don’t hesitate to reach out for suggestions for your session.

Why should we hire a photographer for newborn photos? Lifestyle Newborn Session- Wilton, Connecticut Lifestyle Newborn Photographer Kendra Conroy Photography

Welcoming a baby into your family is such a joyous occasion for everyone in the family. It is such a beautiful part of your life and you will want to remember this time in your life one day in your future. Now here is the question…Do you take the photos yourself or hire a professional?

RidgefieldNewbornandfamilyphotographerkendraconroyphotography
RidgefieldCtFamilyandnewbornphotographerKendraconroyphotography

Top 5 Reasons why you should hire a professional photographer:

1) These are the days: Your baby will never be this new and tiny again. This time in your lives can never be replaced or redone. I don’t want you to regret not this day documented, you will want you to remember all of the details:

  • How your baby looked so tiny while placed in your arms

  • The classic baby wrapped up in a swaddle in their crib

  • How their tiny their fingers and toes looked

2) Being present in photos: You can be present in photos and spend more time with your newborn rather than taking all the photos yourself. I want you to enjoy all the time you have with your little baby and be in the photos with them. I always try to share the importance of getting in the photos with my clients and I share with them that their child will never be this tiny again. You might not feel your best to be in the photos at the moment, but you will not regret getting in the photos 6 months from now or two years from now. Time truly does fly and it is always wonderful to look back on photos to relive our special days.

  • Hiring a photographer before you give birth take the weight off your chest and allow you to be with your family stress free. You can enjoy this stage of your life without having to worry about what to photograph and what not to.

3) Quality images: You don’t need the additional stress of hoping someone will capture all the details of your baby and your family correctly. We are in the generation where we have our iPhones in our hands constantly and have access having a camera in our hands at all times. iPhones can take good pictures, but professional cameras take the cake and quality the is top notch. Professional photographers know their equipment inside & out and know just exactly how to work with the elements such as the light.

4) Direction- A professional photographer will guide you how to prepare for your session before, during and after. She will offer directions of how to stand, dress for your session and give prompts to make you feel comfortable during your session. Your session experience should be stress free and laid back.

5) The newborn stage is a real blur: These first few weeks of having a newborn will feel like a real blur!  It will be overwhelming with everything going on to take the photos yourself. You can relax knowing the pressure is off knowing you have the don’t have to do it yourself. Y

The Art of Inhome Lifestyle Family Sessions Ridgefield Connecticut Newborn and Family Photographer

In home Lifestyle family sessions are quickly becoming a very popular trend in 2019. The sessions are a very laid back type of photo shoot which takes place within your own home, there are no crazy props or prompts involved.

Now think about your home for a minute. Do you have a favorite part of your home? It could be a room that gets the most sunlight during the day or it could be a part of your home where you and your family spend a most of your time in playing and giggling. In home sessions are more on a personal level and which makes the session feel very special.

Below are some images from one of my most recent shoots with the sweet Moonan family in their beautiful home. This family’s home had the cutest window nooks which a majority of the session took place. It was such a cozy part of their home and a perfect spot for all five of them to sit for their photos.

newtownctnewborn/fresh48photographerkendraconroyphotography

Have you been considering an inhome family session, but have been questioning if your home is the right fit for photographs?

You don’t need a large picturesque home to have a photo shoot in your home, all you need is a window that streams in beautiful natural light and a blank wall. When there is enough natural light we can adapt to anything.

newtownctnewborn/fresh48photographerkendraconroyphotography

In Home family sessions are perfect for families with little ones and for the chilly winter weather seasons we have living on the East Coast. You don’t have to worry about forgetting anything at home, your children will be in the comfort of their own home and you don’t have to worry about the temperatures being bearable. 2019 is the year to get in the photos

Motherhood, it is such a beautiful part of this world, and you feel so blessed to be a mother to your children.

You absolutely deserve all the photographs with your babies. Make 2019 the year you get in the frame with your babies.

RidgefieldctfamilyandnewbornphotographerKendraConroyPhotography

You have a baby on your hip and a toddler at your feet. Your days are full of

  • kissing the boo boos away,

  • changing a million diapers

  • rocking your baby in your arms back & forth all day

  • listening to the same frozen soundtrack over & over

  • giving them all the love, kisses and hugs possible

  • shooing the monsters under the bed away

RidgefieldctNewbornandfamilyphotographerkendraconroyphotography

All of your days of being a mother aren’t a piece of cake and a majority of your days are absolutely exhausting, but you wouldn’t change it for the world. You wouldn’t have it any other way because your children are your world.

RidgefieldCtfamilyandnewbornphotographerkendraconroyphotography

These days of your children being little are extremely short and before you know it you’ll be sending your youngest off to high school. It is absolutely insane how fast time goes by us and how fast our little ones grow up before our very eyes. You are constantly snapping photos of your babies and your husband on your iphone, but do you make sure you are in the frame as well? You don’t want to look back on these days in years to come and regret not getting a photo of your children because you were worried about how tired you looked. You absolutely deserve all the photographs with your babies and one day you will cherish these photographs.

RidgefieldCtfamilyandnewbornphotographerKendraconroyphotography

Make 2019 the year you get in the frame with your babies.

This upcoming March I will be offering Motherhood minis for the first time. I want to give Mommas the opportunity to have photographs of them with their children, and give them a gift of memories for them to cherish for years to come. Interested in more details? Are you expecting a baby this upcoming year and looking at your options for photos? It can be very overwhelming searching for photographers, but I want to make it an easy and stress-free process for you.

Fresh 48 photography is a fairly new trend, but it is a beautiful way to document those sweet moments of welcoming your newborn baby. These sessions take place up to 48 hours after your little one's arrival and take place in the hospital or birthing center.

Fresh48andNewbornRidgefieldConnecticutPhotographerKendraConroyPhotography
