Ridgefield Connecticut Family Photographer | Five tips to rock your family photos

Five tips to rock your family photos

You have officially booked your family session and now it is time to prepare for it! You might be feeling a bit nervous, but that is completely normal. How do you do you prepare exactly? Here are my top 5 tips for rocking your family photos

1) Relax

We all know having a camera in front of you can be intimidating, and it can be stressful trying to make sure your children are looking tip top and behaving, but staying calm and relaxed is always one of my top suggestions. If you are stressed, it will show in pictures and I want you to be enjoying your time your little ones loving on them, ticking them and just being together.

2) On the day of the session be sure everyone is well rested and fed.

We can all get a bit cranky when these basic needs are not met. It is important no one shows up to the session on an empty stomach. I encourage everyone has a substantial meal before the session to provide the energy to make it through a fun and potentially active session.

-Nothing worse than having hangry children during your family session

3) Be prepared to have fun, giggle and play games with your family.

I am not the photographer that focuses on everyone looking perfectly at the camera, but instead focus on the little moments and the connection between family members. We don’t want you to have to have stiff and rigid family photos for you to look back upon.

I always encourage my clients to loosen up, have fun, snuggle and laugh with their family. Don’t be afraid of playing with your children; tossing your toddler in the air, swinging your child back & forth, tickling your children or playing ring around the Rosie. Interacting with your children and playing with your children will create more genuine and happy smiles.

4) Be calm and patient with your little ones.

Little ones can be very hit or miss when it comes to their moods, they can be very unpredictable. I roll with the punches and try everything up my sleeve I can to get a smile out of them, but parents staying cool, calm and collective is often the best solution to their cranky vibes.

If their mood starts to go bad to worse in a matter of seconds I always recommend parents

  • Stay calm (they can sense when you are tense/stressed and it will make them more upset)

  • Hold them/rock them/sing to them/pat them on the back

  • Bring the child’s favorite comfort toy/book for them to hold, it can help calm them down

There is nothing sweeter than a photo of a momma comforting and loving on her little boy.

5) Give yourself enough time

I suggest arriving to the session at least 10 minutes early dressed and ready. I photograph the hour before sunset (golden hour) and after this hour the light is very limited. Be sure to give yourself enough time to get ready and to get to the location, nothing is worse then when you are rushing.

You’ve got this! I try to keep the session upbeat and fun for everyone.

Why should we hire a photographer for newborn photos? Lifestyle Newborn Session- Wilton, Connecticut Lifestyle Newborn Photographer Kendra Conroy Photography

Welcoming a baby into your family is such a joyous occasion for everyone in the family. It is such a beautiful part of your life and you will want to remember this time in your life one day in your future. Now here is the question…Do you take the photos yourself or hire a professional?

Top 5 Reasons why you should hire a professional photographer:

1) These are the days: Your baby will never be this new and tiny again. This time in your lives can never be replaced or redone. I don’t want you to regret not this day documented, you will want you to remember all of the details:

  • How your baby looked so tiny while placed in your arms

  • The classic baby wrapped up in a swaddle in their crib

  • How their tiny their fingers and toes looked

2) Being present in photos: You can be present in photos and spend more time with your newborn rather than taking all the photos yourself. I want you to enjoy all the time you have with your little baby and be in the photos with them. I always try to share the importance of getting in the photos with my clients and I share with them that their child will never be this tiny again. You might not feel your best to be in the photos at the moment, but you will not regret getting in the photos 6 months from now or two years from now. Time truly does fly and it is always wonderful to look back on photos to relive our special days.

  • Hiring a photographer before you give birth take the weight off your chest and allow you to be with your family stress free. You can enjoy this stage of your life without having to worry about what to photograph and what not to.

3) Quality images: You don’t need the additional stress of hoping someone will capture all the details of your baby and your family correctly. We are in the generation where we have our iPhones in our hands constantly and have access having a camera in our hands at all times. iPhones can take good pictures, but professional cameras take the cake and quality the is top notch. Professional photographers know their equipment inside & out and know just exactly how to work with the elements such as the light.

4) Direction- A professional photographer will guide you how to prepare for your session before, during and after. She will offer directions of how to stand, dress for your session and give prompts to make you feel comfortable during your session. Your session experience should be stress free and laid back.

5) The newborn stage is a real blur: These first few weeks of having a newborn will feel like a real blur!  It will be overwhelming with everything going on to take the photos yourself. You can relax knowing the pressure is off knowing you have the don’t have to do it yourself. Y

2019 is the year to get in the photos

Motherhood, it is such a beautiful part of this world, and you feel so blessed to be a mother to your children.

You absolutely deserve all the photographs with your babies. Make 2019 the year you get in the frame with your babies.

You have a baby on your hip and a toddler at your feet. Your days are full of

  • kissing the boo boos away,

  • changing a million diapers

  • rocking your baby in your arms back & forth all day

  • listening to the same frozen soundtrack over & over

  • giving them all the love, kisses and hugs possible

  • shooing the monsters under the bed away

All of your days of being a mother aren’t a piece of cake and a majority of your days are absolutely exhausting, but you wouldn’t change it for the world. You wouldn’t have it any other way because your children are your world.

These days of your children being little are extremely short and before you know it you’ll be sending your youngest off to high school. It is absolutely insane how fast time goes by us and how fast our little ones grow up before our very eyes. You are constantly snapping photos of your babies and your husband on your iphone, but do you make sure you are in the frame as well? You don’t want to look back on these days in years to come and regret not getting a photo of your children because you were worried about how tired you looked. You absolutely deserve all the photographs with your babies and one day you will cherish these photographs.

Make 2019 the year you get in the frame with your babies.

This upcoming March I will be offering Motherhood minis for the first time. I want to give Mommas the opportunity to have photographs of them with their children, and give them a gift of memories for them to cherish for years to come. Interested in more details? Secret Iphone camera tips for the Holidays | Ridgefield, Ct Newborn and Family Photographer

Christmas is right around the corner and while your wrapping presents take a second to read my top suggestions on how to take a good family iPhone pictures .
The holidays are such a magical time of year and I believe these moments should be documented.

Here are some tips for you that you can easily use your iPhone to document your Christmas day.

Tips for iPhone photos for Christmas morning

Don’t zoom in: Don’t zoom in either get closer to the subject or wait until after you take the photo to edit it.

Natural light is critical and can help make a photo. Try to stand in a spot that has the best light, but beware of shadows casting on the skin.

Sunshine icon: Adjust the light in camera as needed it is looking too bright or dark. There is an option to adjust the lighting by clicking the screen, and a sunshine icon will appear. You can move the sunshine up to add more light and move it down to brighten it.

Use a self-timer: Setting up a timer instead of a selfie. Mix it up this year, if you cannot hand off your phone to take a photo just us the self-timer option. Setup your iPhone at an eye-level position (windowsill or mantel), make sure to use the back of the camera (the quality will be much better) and set the 10-second timer. It will take ten photos and will give you plenty of options to choose from. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get a good shot, but is often worth it documenting the holidays with your loved ones!

Use your Apple watch as a remote shutter.

Open the Camera app on your Apple Watch, and it will automatically open the Camera app on the paired iPhone. Prop up the iPhone in a nice vantage point while checking the shot is right on your Apple WatchWhen you're happy, either tap the white circle on the watch screen to take the photo or hit the '3s' button to set a three-second delay. The latter is useful when you want to take - and be in - a group family photo and not be looking down at your watch at the moment the shutter goes off.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season! I am so excited to see what 2019 brings and to photograph all of my awesome clients both new & old in this upcoming new year.

Top Last minute photo gifts to give

Top Last minute photo gifts to give

The holidays are less than one month away and the countdown is on! Now it is time to get your act together!

Here are some ideas for you that you can easily use your images from your 2018 photo session or cell phone images. Nothing is sweeter than seeing photos you love so very much printed out for loved ones to see! Here are some gift ideas for loved ones that involved prints!

  1. Personalized Photo Ornaments-

Head to your craft store and pick up a couple ornaments have the option to put your own photo in. Most wallet-sized images fit inside these little frames. This is the perfect little gift for grandparents.

2) Print in a wooden block or metal photo holder

  • This is a perfect idea for those that don’t have much space to display photos on the walls or shelves. You have the flexibility of alternating your display by rotating out different photos

3) Photos in a decorative frame-

  • Pick out a favorite image of yours and head to Target or Home Goods to select a decorative frame. There are so many different options of decorative frames at Home Goods, put that beautiful print inside and it will be ready to go for your gift! It can’t get any simpler than that! No need to give a large printout, I think a 4x6 or 5x7 print is perfect!

4)  Decorative photo album- Get a small decorative album to fill with your favorite prints from your session or iPhone. You can arrange the photos any way you want and they will have the option to use the photos inside in different ways around their home.  It will be the perfect gift for loved ones!

5) Photo display clips/ropes-Do you know someone that loves prints and is running out of ways to display them? Most Home Goods/Tjmacs sell ropes in which you can hang on your walls and clip prints to them. It is a creative way to display your images and you have the option to switch out the images without the hassle.

Lifestyle Newborn Faq: Ridgefield Connecticut Lifestyle Newborn and Family Photographer

Do you have an upcoming newborn session with me, but still have questions?

This will be a helpful guide which will answer any questions you might have for me regarding how newborn sessions work!

What is the difference between a lifestyle newborn session and a posed newborn session?

Posed newborn sessions often take place in a studio and include lights, blankets and props. While Lifestyle newborn sessions take place within the clients home, using natural light and don’t involve any props. Lifestyle newborn sessions are very laid back and run all on the baby’s schedule. The baby often runs the show and I like to build in enough time during the session for multiple feedings, diaper changes etc.

With lifestyle sessions, I don’t focus on the picture perfect smiles of everyone looking at the camera. Sometimes getting everyone to focus their attention on the camera and smiling can be frustrating and exhausting so I instead focus on the moments of you cradling or rocking your newborn in your arms while your husband tosses your toddler in the air. I want to keep everyone happy and make sure the session very laid back.

Can parents and siblings be in the photos?

Yes of course and in fact I often encourage it! I usually focus on the family as a whole and have your family focus your attention on the baby. I encourage my clients to just take it all in and just love on your newborn baby. Cuddle them, kiss them and hug them. This stage of your life is full of joy and excitement welcoming a new baby and I want to document all of the different emotions for you to remember.

Where Are We Going To Take The Photos?

  • A majority of the session will take place in the baby's room or master bedroom or living room

  • I often love to pose the family and new baby in the parent's bed, on the couch, anywhere comfy and snuggly.

How Long Is The Session?

-Anywhere between 1 hour to 2 hours max all depending on how baby’s mood is. Typically during newborn sessions we take a lot of feeding and diaper changing breaks.

What Do We Wear?

  • I recommend my clients dress comfortably (The session is a laid back and fun shoot so it is important you feel comfortable whatever you are wearing).

  • I recommend to moms to wear a light and flowy shirt or dress. I want you to be comfortable during your session and feel your best. Layers and textured fabrics look great in photos.

  • Try to stick to the Neutral/Pastel color palette. I find that the colors cream, white, tan, taupe and gray tend to photograph best. I recommend avoiding busy patterns, bright colors (they can create a color cast on your skin) and clothing with characters/wording on them as they can be distracting.

  • When my clients book they receive a style guide and a what to expect guide, both will guide you through how to prepare for your session including what colors to wear for your session.

What if the baby starts to cry during our session?

No worries! I am always prepared for breaks- The baby runs the show and will take some occasional breaks for feedings, diaper changes etc. Babies can be very unpredictable and it is totally normal for the baby to be fussy.

What Should The Baby Wear?

  • The baby will be swaddled a majority of the session, but I suggest setting aside 1 or 2 simple outfits for them to wear during the session. I suggest picking out a solid or lightly patterned swaddle for the baby to wear during the session.

When should we book our newborn session?

  • I recommend my clients book at least 6-8 weeks before newborn sessions to guarantee a spot on the calendar. My newborn sessions take place within the clients home and typically take place two weeks after the baby is born.

Did I miss anything feel free to reach out to Kendra at to set up a phone call to discuss your newborn session further.

Are you a holiday card procrastinator? Ridgefield, Ct Newborn and Family Photographer

Are you a holiday card procrastinator? You have the ideas in your head, the specific cards picked out, but no images to fill them up?

Well Kendra is here to save the day! Book your session before this upcoming Tuesday December 13th and get your images delivered back in one week! Normally my turn around time is three weeks, but I decided to up it for this time of year only! It won’t be lasting long, but it is the perfect opportunity for you procrastinators!

Worried it is too cold outside for photos? No worries! Photos can also take place in your home of your family decorating the tree, cuddle up in front of your fireplace reading stories or doing fun activities such as baking cookies! The ideas are endless, but your time is not. Email to book before your time has run out.
